It is rare for King Abdullah of Jordan, who inherited the throne in 1999, to speak to the international press so frankly and at such length. In this exclusive interview with Politique Internationale, the Hashemite sovereign openly addresses some of today's most pressing issues. Neighboring Syria is experiencing a bloodbath; the country's other neighbor Iraq is torn by sectarian violence; the Israel-Palestine conflict has a major impact on Jordan, where a large share of the Palestinian population now resides; and of course the region was recently swept by the Arab Spring-a movement that did not leave the Kingdom's citizens indifferent. As a consensus-builder, King Abdullah seeks above all to preserve domestic stability, while continuing to reform his country to make it more democratic and modern. But he also knows that the future of the Jordanian kingdom largely depends on the pacification of the Middle East-a vast challenge indeed!
