The construction of Europe, which was made possible by Franco-German reconciliation, is currently imperilled. The effects of the 2008 financial crisis, the shock from Brexit and unprecedented migratory pressures have all led to a reshuffling of the European political landscape, accompanied by a strong rise in all manner of populist movements. As discussions get under way for a new alliance that would redefine cooperation between France and Germany, the choices are straightforward. Either there is an ambitious Franco-German deal that is visionary and outward facing - a deal able to subsequently attract other European nations - or the European Union as it was conceived will simply cease to exist. Europe cannot affirm its stature as a global player without the robust Franco-German partnership that figured at the core of its original DNA.
